Jaguar Land Rover is expected to announce its entry into Formula E this week. Their presence in Formula 1 began in 2000 backed by Ford and lasted till 2004 when Ford decided to pull out due to expenses and low performance.
Jaguar has had a fair share of motorsport success in the past, most notably in Sports car racing where they won Le Mans 24 Hours in 1951, 1953 and 1955 to 1957 with the C-Type and D-Type. Now the company has a plan to manufacture electric cars in future and aims to introduce a number of electric cars to rival Tesla Motors especially the Model X. Formula E will act as their proving ground for new technologies.
The Formula E championship held its first season in 2014 where teams raced with one type of car provided by Spark Racing Technologies in conjunction with Renault. For the second season, rules allowed different manufacturers to make their own powertrains including McLaren, Renault, Citroen, Mahindra and Abt.
