Big things are in the works for Porsche's midengine offerings, including a new pricing structure, a new name and new engines.

Porsche has confirmed the innovated Boxster and Cayman will be powered by four-cylinder turbocharged engines, while both models will be known as the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman respectively when they arrive next year. 

The 718 name wasn’t chosen randomly. It’s taken from a victorious race car built between 1957 and 1962 that was at the first place in Italy’s challenging Targa Florio in 1958 and in 1960, and first in class during the 1958 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. All versions of the 718 were equipped with a flat-four engine, and that’s where the connection with the updated Boxster and Cayman comes in. Additionally, Porsche's pulling a switcheroo with the two cars' pricing. 

Most automakers sell coupe variants for less than convertibles, but Porsche has always been the other way around with the Boxster and Cayman. No more -- as the changes come into effect, the fixed-roof Cayman will run you less money than the drop-top Boxster.
